Tops Tips for Aspiring Trainees

Trainee Solicitor Programme
The Trainee Diaries: A Day in the Life with Presley Bee
Q&A with Solicitor Alex Walters

We are pleased that you are considering Warners for your training contract. Having successfully seen a number of trainees through the process over the years, what has really stood out to us is that there is no such thing as one type of trainee – we encourage anyone who fits our recruitment criteria to apply.

This being said, there are things that we as a firm particularly value in our selection process.

What we look for:

  • Curiosity – not just about the law but also about life in general.
  • A willingness to take part – the tasks given to a trainee in a regional firm such as Warners are very varied. From court attendance, to site visits, Will witnesses in care homes, all these tasks provide trainees with crucial experience. We also offer a wide range of networking events that all lawyers, including trainees, are encouraged to take part in, and there are plenty of events specifically suited to trainees.
  • A willingness to learn – we recognise that trainees join us to develop their skills, and our lawyers are committed to supporting your growth and guiding you through new tasks. As you gain experience, you’ll be given greater responsibility when you’re ready.
  • Confidence to contribute – we want to hear what our trainees think about the work that they do, and for them to ask questions. We therefore encourage you to ask questions at any stage—your curiosity is always valued.
  • Team player – a phrase that is used a lot but really does apply – both to tasks on a day to day basis, to coming along to office summer and Christmas parties and networking events.
  • People-orientated – our clients are at the centre of what we do. Trainees will have the opportunity to meet clients in person and contribute to cases and correspondence.

Tips for the application form:

  • Please check your spelling – careful spelling, attention to detail and grammar help your application really stand out.
  • Check you have given us all the information that we have asked for, please don’t leave any sections blank.
  • We don’t expect you to be a world class chess player, footballer, singer and speak 6 foreign languages (although we’d be impressed if you did!). We’re interested in learning about the activities you’re most passionate about, and value detailed insights into one or two interests rather than a long list.
  • Please don’t leave gaps in any timeline for education – if there are any gaps in your education timeline, we appreciate a brief explanation, as it helps us understand your journey.

Applications close on Monday 7th September.
