If you’re considering a career in law, you’ve probably got a few questions about what to expect. In this article we caught up with Abby Young a solicitor in our Private Client team who shares some invaluable insights and advice for future trainees.
Yes – I thought it was quite black and white originally, knowing the law and applying it but actually I realised that a large part was about people and communication and having the ability to support clients, be approachable and empathetic. Clients often come to us during significant life events, so not only are we required to be legally precise, we are often required to manage relationships and client expectations which is just as important.
Coffee and planning! Lots of to do lists, diary markers and flagged emails to try and stay one step ahead of deadlines but there are always things that pop up last minute and matters that you aren’t expecting. I found it difficult at first but as I have gained more experience, I have been better with setting more realistic expectations, both for myself and others.
Be yourself but be prepared. The firms want to see who you are, not a copy of all the other applicants or who you think they want to see. Understand why you want to be a solicitor, why you want to apply to that specific firm and be able to explain yourself clearly.
Curiosity, organisation, teamwork and good communication to name a few.
At Warners, we’re proud to support the next generation of legal professionals. If Abby’s journey has inspired you and you’re ready to take the first step in your career, we encourage you to apply for our Trainee Solicitor Programme.
